Gift-giving season is upon us, and this year, many African Americans are choosing to honor Kwanzaa in addition to Christmas and other holiday celebrations. Kwanzaa, celebrated from December 26 to January 1, derives its name from the Swahili phrase matunda ya kwanza, meaning "first fruits."
The holiday, created in 1966 by Professor Maulana Karenga, is centered on seven principles: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. In keeping with tradition, handmade gifts align with the principles of this cultural celebration. Popular Kwanzaa gifts often include cooking tools, food items, and clothing crafted from African prints.
When purchasing a gift for your loved ones this Kwanzaa, one thing to note is that culture and community are fundamental components of the special holiday. In the words of Muhammed Ali, “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.”
